ME800 crashed in Sweden in late Aug 44. It was badly hit by flak on an operation to Stettin and lost 2 engines and sustained severe damage. The aircraft became uncontrolled and the 2 gunners baled out. The pilot managed to regain control and rescinded his order. They headed for Sweden and baled out.
The aircraft put up a determined effort not to crash and flew on for some time, gradually descending. It scrapped the roofs of a village and climbed again and then came down 9 miles away in a forest cutting a swathe through the trees 200 yards long. It caught fire and burnt out. The local fire brigade came and put out the surrounding fires. The wreckage was transported by rail to Angleholm and scrapped by a Mr Aronsohn.
The 2 gunners survived and were taken POW.
The other 5 that baled out over Sweden also survived and returned to England after a short period of internment.
The pilot, F/O C D Thieme and his wireless operator, Sgt H W Vine, were back on operations with 576 Sq with a new crew in Jan 45. They were shot down in Feb 45.
Theime survived but Vine was sadly killed.
