Brian-Caldersmith > RAAF Lincoln GR31, A73-64, was one of 73 similar aircraft manufactured by the Department of Aircraft Production (DAP) or Government Aircraft Factory - Beaufort Division at Fisherman’s Bend and was on strength with No.10 Squadron at Townsville in 1955.

My father, Sqn Ldr Jack Finlay, was the 2IC of 10Sqn and, as such, was the navigator to the CO Wng Cdr John Costello. On the evening of 8th April 1955 (Good Friday), Wng Cdr Costello volunteered his crew to conduct a mercy flight for a new-born baby, Robyn Huxley, who needed urgent medical treatment in Brisbane for a heart condition. Along with volunteer nurse, Sister Mafalda Gray, the Lincoln’s crew included Sqn Ldr Charles Mason and Flt Lt William Cater. The combination of adverse factors including low cloud and rain en route led the aircraft to impact with the top of Mt.Superbus, the highest mountain in S.E. Queensland. There were no survivors.

Warwick and Peter Finlay, along with three of their sons, visited the crash site on Easter Saturday 1988, the 33rd anniversary of the accident. They attached a plaque to the fuselage of the Lincoln. The 50th anniversary memorial gathering was held at the Emu Vale former public school at Easter 2005 to which many of the families of the victims of the crash and members of search parties who located the aircraft attended.

Reference for Brian's painting was supplied by Peter Finlay. This consisted of a self-constructed model of A73-64 and photographs taken from a flight in a company demonstrator Jabiru J160C aircraft over the mouth of the Burnett River at Bundaberg.

Best wishes

Peter Finlay
